TESTIMONIAL

Cllr. Meirion Hughes regarding your work "Togetherness" at Parc Cae Derw (2012):

"Following a competitive selection process, Joseph Ayavoro was commissioned in 2012 to produce a piece of public sculpture art for display in Parc Cae Derw in my community, Llandudno Junction.

I was part of Conwy County Council's selection panel choosing the artist, and it is true to say that the moment we met Joseph, his positive energy and that of his art stood out. It was clear he was an international artist and one of considerable repute.

Joseph’s hallmark, I believe, is energy. His work emanates it. For 'Togetherness', he carried out every aspect of it, from the hard graft of fabricating raw steel to the digging out of the sculpture's base. The resulting work, when approached, triggers in me that indefinable, ineffable 'moment'. There are no words to encapsulate Joseph’s work, which I believe to be truly significant."

My Sculpture Practice

Joseph Ayavoro

"My work is an exploration of the paradox between the industrial and the organic. Using the welder’s torch, I bridge the gap between heavy, unyielding metal and the fluid grace of the human form and abstract thought.

In my figurative pieces, I seek to strip away the literal to find the essential gesture. I use steel not to replicate the body, but to capture its spirit—the tension of a muscle, the tilt of a head, or the silent weight of a stance.

In my abstract works, this focus shifts toward the metal's structural language. Here, I play with balance, negative space, and the raw textures created by the welding process, turning industrial remnants into rhythmic, visual puzzles.

Whether I am constructing a recognisable silhouette or an intricate abstraction, my process remains the same: a high-heat negotiation with the material. I am fascinated by how a seam of molten metal can permanently fuse separate elements into a singular narrative. My sculptures are a celebration of strength and vulnerability, inviting the viewer to see the potential for movement in the static and the life within the iron."
